Lake Singkarak
(folklore from West Sumatra)

Once upon a time, in a village in West Sumatra, lived a poor man named Mr. Buyung. He lived in a little house near the sea with his wife and his little son named Indra. He lived by collecting forest products and fishing in the sea.

Every morning he went out to a forest to collect rattan and resin. Then he sold them in a market. When the fishing season came, he went to the sea to catch fish. One day the condition was bad. There was no rattan, resin, and fish to sell. Mr Buyung went to the forest but he did not find rattan and resin. He went to the sea but he did not catch a fish. He had no money to buy food for his family. The bad condition lasted for many days. In a stressed condition, Mr Buyung asked his little son to find food by himself. Early in the morning the little son, Indra, went to the sea. While Indra was in the sea, Mr Buyung and his wife tried to cook shellfish, a new food for them. Fortunately, shellfish was good for food. They were confused because the food was not enough for 3 people. Now Mr Buyung was very very hungry. He ate the food or died. Finally he and his wife ate the food.

At sunset Indra went home. He was very angry to see his parents did not spare food for him jpg. He left the house with Taduang, his beloved rooster. Taduang said he wanted to fly. He asked his master to hold his foot. Indra did it. While they were flying, Taduang lost power. They both fell to the ground and caused a big hole. Then water filled up the hole. People call it lake Singkarak.

The Crow and the Snake
One day a crow built a nest in a tree and laid some eggs. She did not know that a Snake had a nest near the root of the tree. Her chicks were soon hatched, and the Crow began flying to search food for them.

One day she returned to the nest and found one of her chicks gone. She wondered what had happened to it and was very sad, but there was nothing she could do. On the next day another chick was gone. The crow wept loudly. Afraid that she would lose her last chick, the Crow decided to find out who had taken her chicks. Suddenly she saw a snake, from its nest near the roots, crawl up the tree and eat up her last chick. The Crow could do nothing to save her chick.

One day a princess had a bath in the river near the tree. She took off her gold necklace and laid it on the tree. The Crow got a good idea. She took the necklace and dropped it to the hole where the snake lived. The servants knew it. They began digging the hole. Finding the snake, they killed it and took out the necklace.

EARTHQUAKE

Earthquake is a sudden shaking of the earth’s surface that often causes a lot of damage. It is the result of a sudden release of stored energy in the Earth’s crust that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes may happen naturally or as a result of human activities. Smaller earthquakes can also be caused by volcanic activity, landslides, mine blats, and nuclear experiments.

At the Earth’s surface, earthquakes can be seen from the shaking or displacement of the ground. Sometimes, they cause tsunamis, which may lead to loss of life and damage of property. There are two types of earthquakes that occurs naturally, they are tectonic and volcanic earthquakes. Tectonic earthquakes are earthquakes that are caused by tectonic plates getting stuck and putting a strain on the ground. The strain becomes so great that rocks give way by breaking and sliding along fault planes. Volcanic earthquakes are earthquakes which are caused by the movement of magma in volcanoes. In volcanic regions earthquakes may be caused both by tectonic faults and by the movement of magma in volcanoes. Such earthquakes can be an early warning of volcanic eruptions.

Last month, I took a weekend trip to Seoul. I read about this cute art village called Heyri, so I went out on a search. It was quite an adventure.

I took the 8 a.m. train to Seoul via bullet train. I arrived a little before 11 a.m. I locked up my bags and looked for the subway. My teacher told me that Seoul’s subway system was chaotic. I waited for 40 minutes for it to come. Then, once I got on and sat down, it waited for 30 minutes. I rode for another 40 minutes. Then I transferred to a bus. I was lucky because the bus ride was not as long as the train trip. It was only 20 minutes. I was happy to have finally arrives at my destination.
